Media Update: Immigrants in Nashville Become Storytellers in Three-Day Training

This July, NPT held its first Storyteller Boot Camp, where in three days local immigrants and refugees picked a story idea, gathered footage and edited it all into a video destined for the Storytellers blog.

Led by NPT producer Will Pedigo (Children’s Health Crisis, Next Door Neighbors, Beautiful Tennessee: Our Scenic Waterways) and production assistant Soraya Salam, the bootcamp attracted participants from numerous backgrounds, including Bhutan, Mexico, Kurdistan, and Rwanda. What resulted was a vibrant collection of thoughtful, personal stories sharing insights on Bhutanese refugee camps, Mexican second-generation identity, Nepali food traditions, urban gardening and more.

Born from the Next Door Neighbors series, Storytellers is a project at NPT where we train and equip immigrant and refugees in Nashville to tell their own stories using basic Flipcams and editing software.

To see the results of all the participants hard work, as well as other videos from the project, view the playlist below. You can find out more about NPT Storytellers at wnpt.org/storytellers.
