Gallatin was established in 1802 and named for Albert Gallatin, Secretary of Treasury to Presidents Jefferson and Madison.
As the Civil War approached, the citizens of Gallatin and Sumner County were generally opposed to secession from the Union but ultimately chose to unanimously support the Confederacy.
Following the civil war, freed African Americans established communities near Gallatin and also established the nation’s first agricultural fair for black citizens.
