On this episode of Volunteer Gardener, Sheri Gramer strolls through the gardens of Green’s grocery in Leipers Fork and finds loads of country charm; Marty DeHart tours the gardens of a graceful and stately home that was built as a school in 1858; and Tammy Algood serves up a Southern favorite with a new twist, Pimento Cheese Spoon Bread.

Green’s grocery will be open to the public as part of the Heritage Foundation’s annual spring tour featuring historic Leipers Fork and downtown Franklin homes and sites. Altogether, there are twelve gardens open for the tour. The Town and Country Tour of Homes will be held June 4-5, 2005. Hours will be 10 am-5 pm on Saturday and 1 - 5 pm on Sunday. The garden that Marty DeHart featured will be open to the public, along with five others, as part of the Tour of Town and Country Gardens, benefiting the Huntsville Botanical gardens. Annette’s ideas for fresh corn:
Microwave method
1. To microwave one ear of fresh corn, remove a few outer husks, but leave on the remaining husks and silks.
2. Roll ear in wax paper, twisting each end.
3. Microwave for 3:00
4. Shuck, roll in butter, and enjoy.
To freeze fresh corn
1. Place about 6 ears of corn in a large pot of boiling water. Boil for 5:00.
2. Remove ears from pot and submerge in a pan of ice water for about 5:00, turning ears to cool evenly.
3. Drain ears.
4. Cut off corn with sharp knife. Place in freezer bags. Squeeze out air and seal. Keeps for 6 months.
