Episode #1209
Air Dates: 1/15/04 and 1/18/04
This time on Volunteer Gardener, Troy Marden tours a
Mt. Juliet garden designed into separate themed "rooms"; Julie Berbiglia
visits a church community in Wilson County to find out how it supports
a vegetable garden for hunger relief efforts; Annette Shrader shares
a recipe for trough containers; and Jeff
Poppen demonstrates his method for pruning fruit trees.
Trough Containers:
1 part Portland cement
1 part sand
2 parts peat moss (large twigs removed)
1 part water
Container of choice
Rubber gloves
Face mask
Wearing rubber gloves and face mask, mix dry ingredients very
thoroughly. Add water a little at a time, beginning with a half
portion. Mix until it reaches a mud consistency. Line a chosen
container mold with the mixture. Remember to poke a drainage hole
in the bottom with a dowel or stick. The hole can be fully opened
after releasing the mold. Let dry in the mold 24-48 hours. Gently
release the mold. Let the finished trough garden dry for at least
a week before planting.
