On this episode, Marty DeHart has an important review of landscape plants that could pose a danger to children and animals; Catherine Darnell stops to admire the roses at the home of a Franklin rosearian; and Ron Gunter demonstrates how to keep the cutting edge on lawn and garden equipment.

Some Toxic Landscape Plants:

  1. Caladium-causes intense burning and paralysis
    of mouth and throat
  2. Rhubarb-the leaves can cause sickness
  3. Jack in the Pulpit-all parts are toxic, especially the roots.
  4. Ivy-the leaves can cause digestive upset.
  5. Lantana-the green berries in some varieties can
    cause digestive upset
  6. Sweet Pea-do not eat the seeds
  7. Hellebore-all parts can cause digestive pain and vomiting
  8. Bleeding Heart (eximia and spectabilis)-leaves and roots
  9. Tomato and Potato leaves-tomatine
  10. Polygonatum or Solomon's Seal
  11. Delphinium-used as heart depressant; fatal in large amounts
  12. Foxglove or digitalis-used as heart stimulant;
    fatal in large amounts
  13. Lobelia or Cardinal Flower-all parts are poisonous.
    Several deaths.
  14. Nicotiana or Flowering Tobacco-Nicotine is a powerful poison;
    fatal
  15. Lily of the Valley-all parts fatal; one of the most
    poisonous plants.
  16. Castor Bean-ingesting 2 seeds are fatal for an adult
  17. Mountain Laurel-highly poisonous; all parts fatal
  18. Yew-red berries are highly toxic; fatal in sufficient quantity.
