plants that could pose a danger to children and animals;
Catherine Darnell stops to admire the roses at the home
of a Franklin rosearian; and Ron Gunter demonstrates how to keep
the cutting edge on lawn and garden equipment.
Some
Toxic Landscape Plants:
- Caladium-causes intense burning
and paralysis
of mouth
and throat
- Rhubarb-the leaves can
cause sickness
- Jack in the Pulpit-all parts are toxic, especially
the roots.
- Ivy-the leaves can cause digestive upset.
- Lantana-the
green berries in some varieties can
cause digestive upset
- Sweet Pea-do not eat the seeds
- Hellebore-all parts can cause
digestive pain and vomiting
- Bleeding Heart (eximia and spectabilis)-leaves
and roots
- Tomato and Potato leaves-tomatine
- Polygonatum or Solomon's
Seal
- Delphinium-used as heart depressant; fatal in large
amounts
- Foxglove or digitalis-used as
heart stimulant;
fatal in large amounts
- Lobelia or Cardinal
Flower-all parts are poisonous.
Several deaths.
- Nicotiana
or Flowering Tobacco-Nicotine is a powerful poison;
fatal
- Lily of the Valley-all parts fatal; one of the most
poisonous
plants.
- Castor Bean-ingesting 2 seeds are
fatal for an adult
- Mountain
Laurel-highly poisonous; all parts fatal
- Yew-red berries
are highly toxic; fatal in sufficient quantity.
