Wartrace was founded in 1852, spurred by the construction of the Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad. Businesses set up shop and residents built homes that were visually accessible from the train to accommodate a new civic alignment with the railroad depot becoming the central focus of community. The name Wartrace comes from its original use as a trail for Native Americans. The Tennessee Walking horse industry played a prominent role in the town’s economic and cultural life earning Wartrace the moniker “Cradle of the Walking Horse.”
